Planet Bee is a magazine about honey bees. It is accessible to knowledge about honey bees with an abundance of tips, tricks, products, and much more for beekeepers, beginners, and the general public. This magazine features 12 pages of bee information, advertisements and feature articles.
Objective
To design and produce a condensed 12-page magazine layout with any topic that included three non-existing ads, a contents page, an upfront section, a cover story, feature stories, and a columnist page. Effective photography and illustrations to enhance the look, create a suitable wordmark for the magazine, and elements such as the deck, pull quote and photo credit, were required. A promo video was a deliverable to increase interest in the magazine.

Process
I designed a fictional bee magazine called “Planet Bee,” drawing inspiration from my beekeeper father and my upbringing surrounded by bees. Leveraging pictures, videos, and knowledge about bees, I centred the cover story on fall health concerns, feature stories on our family business, Bear’s Treasure, and the intricate relationship between bees and flowers. The magazine’s ad topics include a hair wax cream product, called Fuzzy, a varroa pest control called Vack!, and a bee hive service called Marigold.
After extensive research, I selected a colour palette that reflects the hues of a hive—yellows, browns, purples, and oranges. I designed the front cover to feature an illustration of a sick baby bee, the “Planet Bee” wordmark, and highlights of feature story topics. I created fictitious ads, laid out the contents page, designed feature story pages, and crafted the columnist page using guides and grids for precise layouts.
Throughout the magazine, I designed the honeycomb as an element to create a consistent layout. For the video, I produced a cinematic but calm piece that follows the beat of the happy music while promoting the informative Planet Bee magazine and its sponsor, Fuzzy.
